  1. Did you ever build one?

I did long ago and the effort probably took more water than the still did deliver.

In my opinion it's something you'll only undertake out of desperation.

Here in the Netherlands we've got the luxury that water is never far away.

Love the simple solution for the tarp. :)

The one that I used was less than 2 feet across. It was constructed in the American desert. It will condense the water in the soil onto the plastic sheeting and also draw moisture from the vegetation. I agree, it is likely to only be built in desperation.
  2. Only in the marines.. GO ARMY!

But when you just look past all the dick measuring you'll see that mostly INFANTRY units learn to appreciate the very basics of human existance. Warm food, clean water, shelter, warmth etc..

In the U.S. Marines we have a saying that, "Every Marine is a rifleman." This is due to the way we train in that infantry skills are taught to all throughout their careers.
  3. No @Wilbert . The Bundy's lived on this land for over 100 years. Yes, under the law they probably should have paid (I would have just to avoid trouble) but their arguments against it are just. There are video's on youtube about it. I believe it was a Bundy daughter who explained it.

Anyway, It is really strange that Federal Agents are sent to collect taxes. There is something more goïng on here.

Even if people don't agree with the Bundy's it's not right to kill so many animals. Disgusting. Personally, I would have paid just to avoid this standoff. It's only a small amount of money per head of cattle. Is it just? NO. Ridiculous. These people lived here in this way for over 100 years. Indians would get more protection. And for what? Not taxes, for corporate greed. I do not agree or even like Alex Jones but sometimes he makes sense and it's very good of him to stand behind the Bundy's where the mainstream media has failed.

@SoCal92057 Thank you for sharing this video. I had not seen it so up close.

@Nazdrovje It's not old and it's not over yet.

The federal government showed up with the guns, Tasers and attack dogs first. It was an over reaction and there is more here than meets the eye. It appears there are Chinese business interests that want the land for a solar energy farm. The same interests have been connected to US Senator Reid as campaign contributors. Senator Reid has a man who worked for him for 8 years, a man by the name of Neil Kornze, now heading the agency that is the Bureau of Land Management and controls the police in the video. Waco and Ruby Ridge are other examples of government pushing people too far. Government is to serve the people. Not push them around. Bundy may be wrong on the question of paying his fees, but you do not create a dangerous situation as the government has in an attempt to coerce the payment. This show of power was meant to intimidate all Americans as to the power of the government. Problem for the government is some will push back. There has been serious problems all through the southwest US over government control of water and land and it is getting ugly. Remember, the government, any government, is not always right. The events in this video preceded the events in the earlier video.

  4. Az Nazdrovje already noted. This video is old.

Repressed anger. Something to deal with. Certainly when a critical mass of the crowd is awakening to the lies they are told.

Who does the US police 'serve and protect', actually ?

The video was taken on April 11, 2014. This is recent and the repercussions of what the armed civilians did are still being felt by the government.

Depends upon which police agency you are talking about. Many police agencies are very connected to those they serve and protect. Others are not. The police agencies themselves are experiencing internal dissent over what orders they will and will not support. Any attempt at gun control or confiscation would create a situation where many police agencies will not participate, this according to their own chiefs of police. In the U.S., the military and the police swear to defend the Constitution, not an individual and certainly not to follow illegal orders that violate the Constitution. Many worry about what may spark violence. There were two episodes in the 1990's. One at Waco, Texas and another at Ruby Ridge, Idaho. Police and civilians were killed.

  5. @SoCal92057

I think it's great that an American college prepper is vissiting us from the U.S.

A warm welcome and nice that you join us crazy Dutch and Belgium preppers.

There is a lot we can learn from eachotter and that's why i'm asking myself the following:

Why don't you tell us something more about yourself.

You can do it over here: http://preppers.nl/forum/forums/7-Voorstelronde

Who are you, why you became a prepper, how did you came on to this site etc. etc.

Also i don't really get your topics on this moment.

Who do you want with you in times of a shtf.

Ofcours a doctor of a dentist, but the truth is that it's me, my family and a few good friends.

If a dentist came along the ride, i'd be happy if he joined the group but that's it.

I see a lot of co-preppers who would'nt react on your post like this if it wasn't in english.

Now the most of them seemed glad that they could show off there english skills.

In another topic you asked about the forgotten preps.

    TO MAKE THE LIST LONGER!

Why should i make the list longer?

There for i made a comment to put my house on it with everything in it.

No more probs and verry well prepped then.

Even though we like to laugh around here and make a lot off jokes, i would like to here more about your skills, life, reassons to prep and why your here.

I hope you don't find this offencive and that you can read between my pour english writting.

    Happy your with us,

    Gamble

Hello Gamble. I regret that I do not have a good knowledge of your language, but things seem to be working out with my posts here on this English language area. Thank you for your welcome. I am a retired professional military man having been a member of the U.S. Marines for over 20 years. I am skilled at woodcraft / bushcraft in a wide range of climatic conditions. I am well versed in tactics, both defensive and offensive and the use and functioning of weapons. I know how to hunt and fish, am a competitive handgun and rifle shooter and I love my country but I am disgusted with most of the members of the current national government. I live remotely in the mountains of the USA where I continue my preps that I began about 30 years ago. Prepping is a sane and reasonable thing to do. Our ancestors always set food and supplies aside to get them past lean times. It seems only during the 20th century and now the 21st century, have we forgotten that lesson due to the false promise by government that they will take care of you. I consider that promise to be a lie in an effort to get votes in an election. I am a prepper who loves freedom, but what is freedom? I think freedom is the lack of coercion. What is coercion you ask? Coercion is the threat that if you do or fail to do something you will receive a consequence. The more coercion the less freedom. Governments cannot exist without the threat of coercion. Laws, all laws, have behind them coercion based upon a consequence. Some consequences may be a money fine, others may be going to prison. The most serious consequence is being put to death at the hands of the government.

Some laws serve the purpose of protecting your health and safety from the careless or criminal actions of others. Laws against driving too fast are an example of this type of law. So are laws against assaulting or murdering another person. There is a delicate balance between needed laws and laws that are not needed and may not even serve the greater good.

When the government raises your taxes to pay for the widening of a road that may be good for some drivers, but bad for the property owners along the road who have their land taken away to allow for the road to be widened. Government cannot give anything to anyone without first taking it away from another. That is not right. What you have earned through your intelligence and labor is yours. To widen the road, they will take away your money in the form of increased taxes to pay for a road you may not even use, and they took away the land of property owners along the road to allow for the widening. The greater good argument may seem to apply here, but wait until your land is taken and your taxes raised for a road improvement that you do not approve of.

Remember, at its best, government is a monopoly and an inefficient provider of services. Government has no reason to improve efficiency as there is no competition and after all, your failure to cooperate will lead to coercion by the government against you. Just try not paying your taxes and see what happens.

Remember, each time you vote for a new law or ordinance you are eroding your liberty, no matter how small the amount. Freedom is seldom lost all at once. Instead it is slowly eroded with the passage of just one more “good” law followed by the passage of another “good” law. After all, a blizzard falls one snow flake at a time and your freedoms are being lost in the same way.

I welcome all who are responding even if it is to practice English skills.

  6. I do not intend to bug out but was thinking about the difficulties associated with bugging out and came up with this brief list. I ask others to add to it. Remember, it is what you should do before you bug out.

Do you know where you want to go?

Have you done a practice run to your bug out location?

Have you practiced with the equipment in your bug out bag?

Have you practiced sleeping outside overnight during cold and wet weather?

Have you stopped to think if bugging out is even necessary?

Have you considered what may become of your residence while you are gone?

Have you done a map recon of the route?

Have you done a map recon of an alternate route?

Have you remembered to take the map?

Do you have a full tank of gas and checked the oil?

Have you checked the spare tire?

Have you supplies (to include prescription medications) and equipment with you as there may be no going back? (I think the estimate of 3 days before all the food is gone from the markets is optimistic.)

Do you have extra money as money may still be useful?

Do you have an alternate plan if the vehicle breaks down?

Have you informed trusted people where you will be?

Are you psychologically and physically equipped for the realities of what you are doing?

Now add your own to make this list even more useful.

  7. So when the government collapses, other people help.

Ehm, what was the problem? In the Netherlands we call that "praticipatiemaatschappij" social participation :) Same work done, for no or low costs.

The problem was the magnitude of the disaster and that both the city and state governments were not prepared. The storm was massive and hit more places than just New Orleans, Louisiana. In the adjoining state of Mississippi, the impacts were significant but well managed. The then mayor of New Orleans, Ray Nagin, is currently convicted of corruption associated with accepting bribes during the reconstruction of the city. As it now stand he will be going to prison for many years.
  8. On their own? And what did the American prepper community do for those who needed help?
From across the USA individuals and groups sent food, bottled water, and volunteers as a spontaneous response to the problem. This was not organized by any government entity. The city government had collapsed. By the way, New Orleans is below sea level which is something I am sure you can appreciate.
  9. That might be the case when that big astroid comes hurteling down, but that's just one scenario. When the SHTF is big enough, nothing matters any more and survival is like partaking in a lottery, no matter how prepared you are.

In case of war, nucleair accident, pandemic i.e. the government will allways try to keep the population calm and under control. They will downplay the events, tell you not to worry, to go to sleep peacefully. Do please go to work and keep shopping, they will take care of the problem. History teaches us that.

Look i.e. at the recent Fukushima disaster.

The worst/best example of government personnel leaving their posts was during hurricane Katrina. This was no asteroid and yet much of the New Orleans police department did not report for work. Any event, big or small, that an individual feels will put their family at risk may cause them not to report to work. The people of New Orleans were mostly on their own for about a week.

Look i.e. at the recent Fukushima disaster.

A government will never admit they have lost control. Once they do, you will realize there is no government. You must maintain a situational awareness of your world, local and international. Wake up and ask yourself what is going on and if it can affect me. The city and state governments lost control during hurricane Katrina that hit New Orleans. Due to government incompetence and individual unpreparedness, many people died. As we know here on this forum, you must be prepared to take care of yourself and family. The government will not be there when things are at their worst. As we say here in the US, "When seconds count, the police are only minutes away."
  11. From the list of 24 occupations;

Select the 5 individuals that you would WANT with you. Do NOT exclude an individual because you already possess the skill set yourself; Then,

Select the 5 individuals that you would NOT WANT with you.

Feel free to explain you answers and don't over think the question. We may be able to learn from others what skill sets are important from this limited list.

    1)chef 2)body builder 3)dentist 4)fisherman 5)warrior/tactician 6)theologian 7)educator 8)hunter 9)firefighter 10)heavy equipment operator 11)auto mechanic 12)farmer 13)lawyer 14)historian 15)businessman 16)pilot 17)doctor 18)athlete 19)lumberjack 20)policeman 21)attractive member of the opposite sex 22)weatherman 23)astronomer 24)handyman - knows plumbing/welding/carpentry/electricity, etc

    MY SELECTIONS

Want with me. DO NOT INCLUDE FAMILY MEMBERS AS I HOPE THAT IS A GIVEN.

    5)warrior/tactician

    8)hunter

    12)farmer

    17)doctor

    24)handyman

    Not want with me.

    2)body builder

    6)theologian

    13)lawyer

    16)pilot

21)attractive member of the opposite sex (Trouble as their attention will be competed for.)

I think that we can improve our personal skill sets by having a how-to book library. Many survival skill sets were widely known 100 years ago but today will only be found in old books on the subject of woodcraft.
  12. This community has more than enough prepping knowledge. But they overvalue the bug out. They often even consider living out in the wild after a shtf, in The Netherlands, one of the most populated country's in the world, that hardly has any wild left! In the USMC and the RNLMC you learn the true value of a building! Even if you're thrown out, you would look for another one. Most people here don't understand that. Kind regards Dick Berts (RNLMC ret).

  13. Besides the obvious traffic jams, the government doesn't want people to stampede from the cities en clog up every possible road. They will block not only highways, but every possible route you can take with a motor vehicle, airports, harbours, etc, trying to keep things under controle.

Either you get out of the city BEFORE things get out of hand, or you can only hope to walk out of there under cover of night.

If the SHTF is bad enough, the authorities will not be at their posts but will be taking care of themselves and family. That will be part of the problem not to mention they will have the authority of their uniform and a firearm to push their way to the front of the line so to speak. In the worst case it will become a survival of the fittest (best armed with whatever that is) situation.
  14. You're a good sport. I was just messin' with ya. The thing is; why for f*cks sake (pardon my French), would anyone drive hundreds of miles, or even walk ten minutes to a location that has NO strategic advantage as to the one you are leaving? You asked for comments, this is mine. It is just plain stupid to have an unprepared BOL. What's the use for having one?

And just to comment on your earlier question directed to me, something in the line of "should I re-write my posts just to entertain you?", the answer is no. You do not have to entertain me, unless however, you are a sexy woman with legs way up to your shoulders, some sort of athletic ability and the total absence of a gag reflex, making my most nastiest fantasies come true, then I guess we could work something out, on the entertainment side that is... ;)

Anyway, back to normal: So what's your view on the dilemma you posted?

Now we're talking JB. I was kind of hoping you were the woman. The unprepared are also the unthinking. No telling what they might do when the SHTF. My view is that history is replete with examples of people bugging out and driving any manner of motor vehicles, horse drawn wagons and pushing carts. It is not a pretty sight. Imagine the biggest stalled traffic jam you have ever seen. Once the roadway system is impassable, refugees will take to the secondary roads and then those roads will suffer the same congestion and immobility. Throw in some who have broken down, run out of gas or collided with another vehicle and the magnitude of the problem becomes clear. I cannot think of a much worse place to be stuck than on the road surrounded by angry and scared people. Soon, some stalled motorist will see a prepper in his motor vehicle, drinking water or eating an energy bar, and then trouble will begin because they were not prepared and have no food or water. Of course, if this happens your new BOL will now be your stalled motor vehicle because you won't be going any place else with everyone stuck in traffic. Not a pretty image. Best wishes.
  15. Okay, for this onle time, I will see it through the fingers.

You must have thought over this, I know that certainly. I am curious after your own ideas. Why would you go to a BOL that has not all the components (shelter, supplies, etc.). Make that the cat wise. You would be driving for John Cock to the BOL, or for the cat his violin.

But yes, we all have to look further than our nose long is, not true?

    With heartly greets,

    JB

All that we post here is helpful to those who have less experience. You should not go to a BOL that is not prepared better than where you have departed from but not all will think that way. This is why we discuss and try to understand what is best for each of us with different circumstances.

    JB

    ;)

I sometimes use one of my previous posts with a few changes based upon suggestions that I receive. Must I rewrite them to entertain you? I will not. The posts are to engage all of us in thinking about the issues. Sometimes there will be funny responses and sometimes there will be serious responses. They are all good. It is only a problem if the post is stolen and my posts are my original work. You should try to be less critical and more helpful. We all have the same interest.
