Russia accused the United States of seeking to "filibuster" a UN Security Council statement on the Gaza crisis and said it could propose a full resolution on the conflict.

Russia's UN envoy Vitaly Churkin said on Monday that one country on the 15-nation council indicated "quite transparently that they will not be prepared to go along with any reaction of the Security Council."

Churkin did not name the country but diplomats said the United States was holding up a statement sought by Arab nations.

The United States cannot accept a United Nations resolution or statement that undermines bids to establish a ceasefire in Gaza, US ambassador to the UN Susan RIce has said, according to the AFP.

More details as we receive them.

The UN security council has ended negotiations today without any agreement on the Gaza issue. It appears that some on the council are pinning their hopes on ceasefire talks in Cairo.

Negotiations will resume tomorrow morning at 15:00 GMT, and Russia has requested that their version of a resolution be voted on at 20:00 GMT.

"We think it's vitally important that this council, by its action, or non-action, is reinforcing the prospects for an agreed cessation" of hostilities, said Susan Rice, the US ambassador to the UN. "That's got to be agreed between the parties to be meaningful or sustainable," Rice said. "That is our principle objective in these discussions."

  2. Shimon Peres, the Israeli president, has accused Iran of encouraging the Palestinians to continue rocket attacks on Israel rather than negotiating a ceasefire, saying "they are out of their mind".

At the same time, Peres praised Egypt's President Mohamed Morsi for the constructive role he has played in the intensifying crisis.

"The unpleasant one is the Iranians. They are trying again to encourage the Hamas to continue the shooting, the bombing, they trying to send them arms," Peres said in a televised interview. "They are out of their mind."

Peres said Israel had no choice but to wage its offensive against Hamas in Gaza despite the rising civilian casualties, citing what he said were 1,200 missiles fired from the territory in the past six days.

"In one minute, if they stop shooting, there won't be any casualties," he said.

In singling out Iran, Peres said, "We are not going to make a war with Iran. But we are trying to prevent the shipping of long range missiles which Iran is sending to Hamas."

"But Iran is a problem, world problem, not only from the point of view of building a nuclear danger, but also from the point of being a centre of world terror.

"They finance, they train, they send arms, they urge, no responsibility, no moral consideration," Peres said.

Asked whether a ground war in Gaza was inevitable, Peres said he was hopeful that there would be a ceasefire.

"The negotiations are still being continued. It's difficult for all parties, but it's not over and the best choice for all of us is to stop shooting," he said.

  3. oh daar is China.

Chinese foreign ministery spokewoman Hua Chunying says that China supports the Arab countries' position on Palestine:

China supports Arab countries' position on the

Palestine issue, and appreciates and supports the proactive

efforts of Egypt and other countries and the Arab League to

    improve the present situation.

    We strongly urge relevant

parties, especially Israel, to maintain maximum restraint

and cease fire as soon as possible."

  4. The Netherlands and Germany may send Patriot missiles to NATO ally Turkey to help defend the country's border with Syria, Dutch news agency ANP reported on Sunday, citing the Dutch defence minister.

Turkey has said it has intensified talks with NATO allies on how to shore up security on its 900-km frontier with Syria after mortar rounds fired from Syria landed inside its territory.

"NATO does not exist for nothing," ANP quoted Dutch Defence Minister Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert as saying.

A Dutch Defence Ministry spokesman said: "There is no request but the Netherlands and Germany are the only countries in Europe with Patriots."

The Dutch minister spoke to her German counterpart last week about a possible deployment, ANP said.

A spokesperson for Germany's Defence Ministry said on Saturday NATO would consider any request from Turkey and confirmed that the United States, the Netherlands and Germany were the countries that had the appropriate Patriot missiles available.

Turkey will formally ask NATO on Monday to set up missiles on its border with Syria due to growing concern about spillover from the civil war in its neighbour, Germany's Sueddeutsche Zeitung newspaper reported on Saturday.

NATO has said it will do what it takes to protect and defend Turkey. Turkey has said it is talking to its NATO allies about a possible deployment of Patriot surface-to-air missiles.

NATO ambassadors would have to consider any request from Turkey and they have a regular weekly meeting on Wednesday but they could call a special one at any time. European Union defence and foreign ministers will be in Brussels on Monday for meetings.

Hundreds of Israelis have taken to the streets of Tel Aviv's Habima Square to protest their nation's military actions in the Gaza Strip.

The Satruday evening protests were initially organised by a Facebook group.

The group said they refuse "the election war"

Around two hours ago, they [israelis] attacked the building where most of the journalists are based ... where the Al Quds channel and Al Quds Radio are based. They attacked it with four rockets. More than three journalists were injured with different levels of injuries.

Breaking news: Second Israeli strike on building in Al Saraya, housing international media in Gaza, including Reuters news agency, according to journalist Mohammed Omer, speaking to Al Jazeera from Rafah.

The building also houses al-Arabiya and Abu Dhabi TV and al-Aqsa, the official Hamas-run channel.

Omer said that journalists are protesting that it's not safe for them to stay in the hospitals.

  8. The IDF Blog now has atrocious gamification badges with points and rewards for sharing the content to social media. For example, if you visit the site 10 times, you get the "Consistent" badge. If you search the blog multiple times, you're promoted to "Research Officer." Yes, Israel has gamified war. This is absolutely horrendous.

of misschien "wir haben es nicht gewusst...."

Russian President Vladimir Putin told Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi in a telephone call that Russia supports Egypt's efforts to halt the escalating violence in Gaza, the Kremlin said.

"The Russian President said that he supports Cairo's efforts directed at normalising the situation," and underlined the need to stop military actions that result in civilian deaths, the statement said on Friday. (AFP)

Iraq's envoy to the Arab League said it would invite Arab states to use oil as a weapon to press for a halt to Israeli attacks on Gaza, but later appeared to withdraw the remark, saying Baghdad would make no particular proposal to a League meeting.

"The Iraqi representative to the Arab League Qais el-Azzawy denies that there is a proposal by Iraq to the Arab foreign ministers meeting tomorrow (Saturday) that will specifically look into the Israeli aggression on Gaza," Azzawy said in a statement emailed to Reuters by a media assistant.

Azzawy had earlier told reporters in Cairo, the Arab League headquarters: "Iraq will invite (Arab) ministers to use the weapon of oil, with the aim of asserting real pressure on the United States and whoever stands with Israel.

He continued: "The economic weapon is the strongest one to be put into effect now, to assure (we are) standing by the Palestinian people, in light of there being no military power that can stand in the face of Israel at the present time."

  12. Two Palestinians were reportedly killed during the visit of Egyptian Prime Minister Hesham Qandil in Gaza.

Al Jazeera is reporting that the new air strike hit the Jabaliya refugee camp, killing two people, including a child, and injuring seven others.

Earlier, Israel pledged to suspend the strikes during the visit of Qandil

    Bijna schokkend!

Egypt officially requested on Thursday a meeting of the UN Security Council to discuss what it described as Israeli "aggression" on Gaza, the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

It said Egypt's representative to the United Nations had sent formal requests to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and to the current head of the council, India's representative.

The Security Council held an emergency meeting on Wednesday night to discuss Israeli strikes against the Gaza Strip but took no action.
